Two years after Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia-based Walker’s Tuna launched its brand, its wild-caught tuna products have landed on the shelves of Coles retail stores nationwide.
After more than two decades supplying premium Australian tuna to restaurants and international export markets, Walker Seafoods Australia launched Walker's Tuna in August 2024, aiming to make that same premium seafood available to everyday Australian consumers.
The brand’s original goal has now been greatly advanced via national distribution in Coles stores, of which there are nearly 900 across Australia.
“Australia produces some of the best tuna in the world, yet Australian families have had limited access to it where they do their weekly grocery shop. I am thrilled that Coles is leading the way in ranging an Australian tuna brand in their tuna aisle,” Walker’s Tuna Managing Director Heidi Walker said in a release, adding that shoppers now have a “genuine Australian option” in a category that has traditionally been dominated by imported products.
Coles Category Manager Rebecca Saragias said the move aligns with Coles’ commitment to supporting Australian producers while giving customers greater access to locally sourced, sustainably caught seafood.
Walker’s tuna is line-caught, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified, and preserved in Australian cold-pressed olive oil. The brand sells its tuna in two packages: Walker’s Tuna Australian Albacore Tuna in Australian Olive Oil in a 70-gram pouch and Walker’s Tuna Australian Albacore Tuna in Australian Olive Oil in a 200-gram jar.
“We have always believed Australians should be able to enjoy the same premium tuna we have been catching and supplying around the world for decades. We catch the fish and know exactly where it comes from,” Walker said. “Preserving it in Australian olive oil was a natural choice because we wanted every part of the product to reflect the quality and provenance of Australian ingredients.”
