1. Pizza
When it comes to pizza – one of the world’s most celebrated dishes – it’s two Italian outposts; one in Glasgow, Scotland; and one in Sydney, Australia; that take the cake.
Sporting a USD 4,200 (EUR 3,694) price tag, the Scotland-based pie was created to sell on e-bay as a fundraiser for the Fred Hollows Association, an Australian Charity for blind children. It was the brainchild of Scottish-born Italian, Dominico Crollo, who runs Glasgow’s Italian fine-dining restaurant Oro.
The restaurant is renowned for their pizza art, but this one was their crowning glory. It comes with caviar soaked in Dom Perignon champagne, Scottish smoked salmon, lobster marinated in cognac, venison medallions, the finest prosciutto, and vintage balsamic vinegar. In addition to all the expensive food items, it also comes with 24-carat gold flakes as topping.
Sydney’s version is a little humbler. “The Lobster” (as it has been dubbed) comes courtesy of the Italian Fratelli Fresh’s Speciale Pizza range. It’s brought an element of theater to the high-end restaurant group, boasting a whole steamed spiny lobster, brushed with garlic butter and parsley and straddled over the pizza with outstretched legs. The lobster nestles over a rich Fior di Latte, and that is it - keeping the entire focus on the luscious crustacean. It will only set diners back AUD 59 (USD 41.80, EUR 36.70).
