Final approvals have come in for BioMar Group’s new aquaculture feed production facility in Tasmania, Australia, the Denmark-based sustainable aquaculture firm announced on 15 August.
The 14-month construction phase for the AUS 56 million (USD 40.7 million, EUR 35.7 million) facility can officially begin now that the local Latrobe Council has given the company its blessing, BioMar said in a press release.
The Council’s DA approval comes a little over eight months after BioMar announced in December 2017 its intent to develop the world-class, state-of-the-art feed production facility in Tasmania – a means of capitalizing on the growth being observed in the sector. The latest wave of approvals ensures that the production facility adheres to responsible environmental practices from the start, according to BioMar Australia Technical Customer Account Manager Alasdair Bradley.
“As part of the DA approval process, the Environment Protection Authority approved the Development Proposal and Environmental Management Plan, ensuring BioMar’s production facility meets all required environmental responsibilities and practices,” Bradley said.
The new feed production operation will be constructed on a site that once housed a particle board manufacturing mill. BioMar Australia plans to host an open day during the weekend of 18 August at the new site, complete with a traditional Australian barbeque, “to continue to keep the local community informed and involved.”
“Now that we have all the final approvals, we look forward to getting construction underway and soon we will be producing locally made, high-performance aquaculture feed not only for the Australian market but for New Zealand and, in the near future, other export markets,” BioMar Group CEO Carlos Diaz said.
