China has removed import tariffs on 33 seafood products from Vietnam, including lobster, tiger shrimp, pangasius, tuna, and octopus, according a statement from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) released earlier this month.
The list has been confirmed by Chinese authorities and was provided by the Department of Industry and trade association of Vietnam’s northern province of Lao Cai, which borders China.
Shrimp, pangasius, tuna, and octopus will also see their tariffs removed. All are main export items of Vietnam, which sees China as a huge market for its seafood production.
Vietnam exported seafood worth USD 267.6 million (EUR 239 million) to China between January and April 2019, falling 8.6 percent from USD 292.7 million (EUR 261.4 million) in the same period last year, according to the latest data from Vietnam Customs.
As of May this year, there were more than 150 Vietnamese companies exporting seafood to China, 45 of which export pangasius and 50 export shrimp, local media reported.
