Lidl Northern Ireland has made a commitment to selling only sustainably sourced fish across its network of 38 stores by the end of 2019.
Currently, 80 percent of the wild-caught chilled and frozen fish sold by the discounter is certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard, while 65 percent of its farmed fish is certified to standards like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Global G.A.P.
Already, 100 percent of Lidl’s canned tuna is sourced from either pole-and-line or fish aggregation device (FAD)-free fishing methods, or is Marine Stewardship Council-certified.
“It is fantastic to see such strong commitment to providing customers in Ireland with 100 percent certified sustainable seafood,” George Clark, the Marine Stewardship Council's senior commercial manager for the United Kingdom and Ireland, said in a press release. “By choosing products with the MSC logo, Lidl shoppers are helping protect our oceans for future generations.”
