Two Belfast, Maine, U.S.A. residents are suing the city over zoning changes that were enacted to accommodate Nordic Aquafarms' proposed salmon farm.
According to an article in The Republican Journal, Donna Broderick and Ellie Daniels filed documents on 11 July with the Belfast Superior Court. They allege that city officials made procedural errors when enacting the zoning changes that would allow Nordic Aquafarms to construct a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) in their city.
The project, announced in January, received the necessary zoning changes in April. When completed, the proposed facility would be one of the largest indoor salmon farms in the world, and the company plans to invest USD 500 million (EUR 436.7 million) by completion.
The two women, who live adjacent to the proposed site, allege that the council bypassed legally required citizen participation procedures.
In response, the city said it is planning to address the issue at a meeting on 15 August.
