Peru’s Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has set the maximum allowable catch of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) resource for this year at 161 metric tons (MT).
According to Ministerial Resolution No. 007-2019-PRODUCE, the quota may be modified if the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE) evidences greater availability of the resource and recommends an adjustment to PRODUCE.
Once the established catch limit has been reached, PRODUCE will close the fishery; otherwise the capture of the resource will conclude on 31 December, 2019.
Meanwhile, the longlining toothfish fishery around the Kerguelen and Crozet Islands in the Southern Indian and Antarctic Oceans has renewed its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. This fishery is composed of six French fishing companies grouped under Syndicat des Armements Réunionnais de Palangriers Congélateurs (SARPC).
