Thai Union Group subsidiary Européenne de la Mer announced on Wednesday, 28 November it will close The Edinburgh Salmon Company Ltd., in Dingwall, Scotland.
The company announced in September it was looking for a potential buyer for the salmon smoking plant, which employs 163 workers as well as 80 to 100 auxiliary staff, according to the BBC.
In a press release, Européenne de la Mer cited “significant financial losses due to the very difficult market conditions affecting the entire industry,” as the reason for the closure.
“We regret to announce that no feasible alternative solution to closure was found during collective consultation,” it said. "As a result, the company will cease production at the end of the year.”
The Edinburgh Salmon Company, or ESCo, will fulfill all its currently contracted obligations through the remainder of 2018, Européenne de la Mer said.
“At this time, our primary concern is the future of our employees and we are now entering into an individual consultation process with each of them. We are making every possible effort to support them in their search for alternative employment. We are exploring all opportunities and are working with the Scottish Government and local enterprise and skills agencies to identify employment options in the local area,” it said. “We would like to thank all employees for their commitment to the company to date and their professionalism during this difficult time. “
