Thousands of pounds of catfish products recalled

Nearly 150,000 pounds of fish paste and other catfish products from Malaysia are being recalled in the United States.

The siluriformes products, including “Fish Paste,” “Fish Paste with Black Moss,” and “Fish Ball with Black Moss,” imported into the United States, were recalled because Malaysia is not eligible to export siluriformes products to the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a statement.

Mannarich Food in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is recalling approximately 145,245 pounds of Siluriformes products that were not presented at the U.S. point of entry for inspection, FSIS said.

The siluriformes products were imported to the U.S. on various dates from 26 June, 2017, through 13 November, 2018, and then shipped to a wholesale and retail locations nationwide. The FSIS is classifying the recall as "Class I," meaning that the potential health risk of the items is high. So far, there have been no confirmed reactions from the consumption of the products.

“The problem was discovered on 19 November, 2018 by FSIS through routine monitoring of eligibility of imported products,” FSIS said in a statement.

The agency is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” FSIS wrote. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The recalled products include:

  • 300-gram plastic containers containing “FISH PASTE.”
  • 300-gram plastic containers containing “MANNARICH FISH PASTE WITH BLACK MOSS.”
  • 2 kg. sealed plastic bags containing “FISH PASTE WITH BLACK MOSS.”
