Japan's tuna auctions move to Toyosu, with prices holding steady

Japan’s biggest tuna auction moved in October from the Tsukiji Wholesale Market to the new Toyosu market, with the first auction in the new facility on 11 October.

Wholesale prices of bluefin tuna at the on 2 October, before the move reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), averaged JPY 7,020 (USD 62.02, EUR 54.79) per kilogram for fresh domestic product, and JPY 3,618 (USD 31.96, EUR 28.24) for frozen imported. 

Imported southern bluefin tuna averaged JPY 2,484 (USD 21.95, EUR 19.39) for fresh and JPY 1,785 (USD 15.81, EUR 13.96) for frozen. Bigeye tuna averaged JPY 2,295 (USD 20.32, EUR 17.95) for fresh domestic and JPY 1,150 (USD 10.18, EUR 8.99) for frozen imported. Yellowfin tuna averaged JPY 946 (USD 8.38, EUR 7.40) for fresh domestic and JPY 1,026 (USD 9.09, EUR 8.02) for frozen imported. 

On 31 October, at the new Toyosu market, frozen prices were as follows, according to a dealer website: Domestic bluefin at JPY 4,000 (USD 35.42, EUR 31.31) and imported at JPY 3,839 (USD 34.00, EUR 30.04); domestic bigeye tuna at JPY 2,310 (USD 20.46, EUR 18.08) and imported at JPY 1,800 (USD 15.94, EUR 14.09); domestic yellowfin at JPY 1,851 (USD 16.39, EUR 14.48).
