Exports of Scottish salmon for the first nine months of this year achieved a total value of GBP 483 million (USD 632.1 million, EUR 542.7 million), representing an increase of 56 percent year-on-year, according to new figures published by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
In the past three months alone, 21,000 metric tons (MT) of fresh salmon worth GBP 136 million (USD 178 million, EUR 152.8 million) was exported by Scottish producers, up 29 percent in value and 25 percent in volume over the corresponding period of 2016.
HMRC’s figures also confirmed that France has overtaken the United States as the largest export market for Scottish salmon with sales at an all-time-high of nearly GBP 45 million (USD 58.9 million, EUR 50.6 million).
This year, Scottish salmon celebrated the 25th anniversary of being awarded the French government’s Label Rouge for taste and quality.
The United States recorded sales of just over GBP 37 million (USD 48.4 million, EUR 41.6 million), while China was worth GBP 14 million (USD 18.3 million, EUR 15.7 million). East Asian markets have continued to grow with Taiwan making it into Scotland’s top five markets with sales of GBP 6.5 million (USD 8.5 million, EUR 7.3 million).
The EU remained the biggest single regional market for Scottish salmon, importing GBP 215 million (USD 281.3 million, EUR 241.6 million) worth of the fish in the nine-month period.
