The Icelandic fishing fleet landed seafood with a total value of ISK 136.9 billion (USD 1.2 billion, EUR 1.1 billion) in the 12-months from August 2015 to July 2016, a decrease of 10.6 percent year-on-year. During this period, the value of the country’s demersal and pelagic catches decreased by 1.6 percent and 38.2 percent respectively, while there value increases were posted for both the flatfish and shellfish landings, according to new figures published by Statistics Iceland.
The country’s demersal catch achieved a value of ISK 98 billion (USD 882.1 million, EUR 795.1 million) during the 12 months. At the same time, its pelagic earnings totaled ISK 25.3 billion (USD 227.7 million, EUR 205.3 million), with only herring, valued at ISK 60 billion (USD 540 million, EUR 486.9 million) posting an increase.
Iceland’s flatfish landings reached almost ISK 9.6 billion (USD 86.4 million, EUR 77.9 million), up 9.7 percent, and its shellfish catch climbed 2.8 percent in value to ISK 3.9 billion (USD 35.1 million, EUR 31.7 million).
Almost ISK 72 billion (USD 648.1 million, EUR 584.3 million) worth of Iceland’s landings went directly for domestic processing, while ISK 19.9 billion (USD 179.1 million, EUR 161.5 million) worth was sold at auction for domestic processing in the 12-month period.
Landings valued at ISK 4.9 billion (USD 44.1 million, EUR 39.8 million) were exported in containers and the frozen-at-sea catch totaled ISK 39.2 billion (USD 352.8 million, EUR 318.1 million).
