Norway's seafood exporters shipped 2.3 million metric tons (MT) of seafood worth NOK 83.2 billion (USD 10 billion, EUR 9.2 billion) in the first 11 months of this year, representing a 7 percent decrease in volume but an increase in value of almost 20 percent compared with the corresponding period of 2015.
According to new figures published by the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), Norway’s seafood exports last month totaled 219,000 MT with a value of NOK 9 billion (USD 1.1 billion, EUR 1 billion), a decrease in volume of 16 percent and an increase in value of 22 percent compared with November 2015.
November's export figures included 94,000 MT of salmon worth NOK 6.1 billion (USD 730 million, EUR 678.2 million) – representing a 2 percent increase in volume and a 38 percent rise in value.
Geir Havard Hanssen, communications director at NSC, said 2016 looks set to be another record year for the Scandinavian country’s seafood export trade.
“Assuming [a] normal performance in December, we see that total exports will pass the NOK 90 billion (USD 10.8 billion, EUR 10 billion) mark by a wide margin. More and more markets are requesting seafood from Norway and our seafood industry is strengthening its position as a key industry for Norway’s future,” he said.
