US, China exports boost Vietnamese pangasius trade

Vietnam’s pangasius exports increased by 5.5 percent year-on-year to a total of USD 650.3 million (EUR 587.5 million) in the first five months of this year, thanks in particular to a surge in the Southeast Asian country’s shipments to the United States, China/Hong Kong and Brazil.

According to the latest statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), pangasius exports to the U.S. market for January through May totaled USD 152 million (EUR 137.3 million), up 12.9 percent year-on-year. Despite the anti-dumping duty and catfish inspection program putting pressure on Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the States, the trade still accounted for 23.4 percent of Vietnam’s overall export value.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to China and Hong Kong for the five months totaled USD 94.9 million (EUR 85.7 million), up 72.7 percent year-on-year, and exports to Brazil amounted to USD 32.8 million (EUR 29.6 million), an increase of 118.3 percent.

However, exports to the EU fell 8.1 percent to USD 109.3 million (EUR 98.7 million). Within the bloc’s main markets for pangasius, there were export value decreases of 3.4 percent and 20.8 percent for the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, respectively. Conversely, exports to Spain and Germany grew 1.9 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively.

In 2015, Vietnamese pangasius products were exported to 142 markets, achieving sales totaling USD 1.6 billion (EUR 1.4 billion), down 11.5 percent compared to the previous year.
