Volume, value of Spanish canned seafood exports reach 10-year high

Spain exported 103,717 metric tons (MT) of canned and prepared seafood worth more than EUR 478 million (USD 568.7 million) in the first-half of this year, representing the highest six-month volume and value achieved by the sector in a decade.

According to industry body Anfaco-Cecopesca, these latest export figures are 16.2 percent higher in volume and almost 22 percent greater in value than those achieved in H1 2016 and 35 percent more in volume and 82 percent more in value than the trade achieved in the corresponding period of 2007.

Anfaco-Cecopesca highlighted that among other things, the sector has benefited from companies’ increased efforts to access more overseas markets.

Spain’s canning sector utilizes several species, but the main varieties used include tuna, cuttlefish, squid, mussels, sardines, mackerel and anchovies.
