Norwegian salmon

Norway exported 98,000 metric tons (MT) of farmed Atlantic salmon worth NOK 5.7 billion (USD 699.4 million, EUR 600.7 million) last month, representing a 10 percent increase in volume and a 2 percent rise in value compared with October 2016.

The average export price for fresh whole salmon last month was NOK 54.65 (USD 6.71, EUR 5.76) per kg, which was down from NOK 55.47 (USD 6.81, EUR 5.85) per kg in September and NOK 5.47 (USD 0.67, EUR 0.58) less than the average for October 2016.

Overall, Norwegian exporters shipped 807,000 MT of salmon products with a total value of NOK 53.4 billion (USD 6.6 billion, EUR 5.6 billion) in the first 10 months of 2017, with the volume and value up 1 percent and 9 percent respectively, compared with the corresponding period of 2016.

The Scandinavian country’s traditional salmon markets of Poland and France have continued to buy the most fish this year.

Prices of 3 to 6 kg Norwegian salmon are expected to fall further this month – to around NOK 52.50 (USD 6.44, EUR 5.53) per kg – but then rise again in December and January in line with traditional seasonal demand to around NOK 57.25 (USD 7.03, EUR 6.03) and NOK 60.20 (USD 7.39, EUR 6.34) respectively.

Norway is forecast to harvest 1.2 million MT of salmon this year and 1.3 million MT in 2018.
