Norwegian prices to slide

Prices for Norway’s farmed Atlantic salmon have stayed high throughout June and are expected to average around NOK 67 (USD 7.88, EUR 7.13) per kg for the month for fresh fish. However, prices should start to fall soon in line with improving supplies.

Analysts forecast the future price of 3 to 6 kg fish to average around NOK 57.90 (USD 6.81, EUR 6.16) in July and NOK 58 (USD 6.82, EUR 6.17) in August.

The average FOB price for fresh salmon so far in 2016 is NOK 57.87 (USD 6.81, EUR 6.15) per kg, up 40 percent year-on-year.

The average price of frozen salmon exports at the start of June was NOK 62.95 (USD 7.40, EUR 6.69) per kg, up 57 percent compared with the same period of 2015. For the year to date, the average price of this product was NOK 52.14 (USD 6.13, EUR 5.54) per kg, up 17 percent year-on-year.

According to Norwegian Statistics, the country had exported 341,476 metric tons (MT) of fresh salmon and 7,395 MT of frozen salmon by the second week of June, representing year-on-year decreases of 8 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

In the first five months of this year, Norway’s salmon exports totaled NOK 23 billion (USD 2.7 billion, EUR 2.4 billion), an increase of 28 percent or NOK 5 billion (USD 587.7 million, EUR 531.6 million) year-on-year. Poland and France have continued to be the main buyers of Norwegian salmon this year.

Norway’s total harvest is expected to drop by around 100,000 MT this year to 1.1 million MT.
