Mexico’s Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) has confirmed periods of shrimp fishing closures in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea in order to protect the growth of the stocks and to ensure that the fisheries remain at a sustainable level.
Published by the Official Federal Gazette (DOF), the seasons and closed areas zones established for the capture of all the shrimp species in marine waters and estuarine lagoon systems of federal jurisdiction of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea are as follows:
- From 00:00 hours on May 1, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on August 15, 2017, in the zone that extends from the border with the United States, in Tamaulipas, to the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River in Veracruz
- From 00:00 hours on May 15, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on October 31, 2017, in the coastal strip opposite the states of Campeche and Tabasco
- From 00:00 hours on May 1, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on September 30, 2017, on the coastal strip opposite the states of Campeche and Tabasco, for the Atlantic seabob fishery
- From 00:00 hours on May 15, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on October 31, 2017, in the area of Contoy
A temporary ban on the capture of all existing shrimp species in the estuarine lagoon systems of the federal jurisdiction of the Gulf of Mexico for the periods and areas indicated below has also been established:
- From 00:00 hours on May 22, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on July 6, 2017, in the estuarine lagoon systems of the Gulf of Mexico, from the border with the United States in Tamaulipas, until the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River, Veracruz
- From 00:00 hours on May 1, 2017 and until 24:00 hours on September 30, 2017, in the estuarine lagoon systems of the state of Tabasco
