Prices for Crangon shrimp rising on less volume

Prices for Crangon crangon, a shrimp species found and caught from the North Atlantic through North African waters and the Mediterranean Sea, have been rising as its volumes have slowly diminished.

Average prices in the Netherlands from January through March 2017 were around EUR 34.00 (USD 39.00) per kilogram, a seven percent jump over January through March 2016, according to data compiled by EUMOFA.

In Europe, the primary markets for Crangon shrimp are Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France. The average annual consumption volume for the species has hovered between 300 and 430 metric tons since 2013, but only about 40 metric tons of the species were consumed in Europe in the first six months of 2017, indicating higher-than-average prices this year are due to lower yield from the fishery.

Since 2013, the average price of Crangon shrimp dipped from EUR 30.50 (USD 35.00) per kilogram in 2013 down to EUR 25.23 (USD 28.96) in 2015. Then prices reversed the trend, peaking at EUR 38.44 (USD 44.11) in 2016.
