Beyond Twitter 101

So, you’ve started your Twitter account, and you’re feeling good. Welcome! Twitter is great for so many reasons, you just need to figure you what works best for you and your company. You maybe have already written up a quick company policy for Tweeting, and have one or more members of your staff contributing.  Here are a few ideas to keep your tweets fresh and fun:

1.  Twitter Trivia (Twivia? Sorry). Try a weekly quiz with trivia that’s relevant to what you do. If you’re selling shellfish to wholesalers, toss out some questions about seasonality or geography. If you make the answer useful to your customers they’ll be more likely to keep an eye out for your weekly question.

2.  Get some photos up there! Use Twitpic or another third party application to quickly post pictures of your daily special or some action back in your fillet room. Don’t worry too much about quality – remember this kind of marketing is down and dirty, get-to-it – no need to work on the perfect lighting for 45 minutes.

3.  Follow people you want to follow you…this seems to work as a non-intrusive way to get someone important to you to notice you’re on Twitter. You can also retweet their tweets, or use their @username in a message – for example if I wanted @Dirksfish to follow me, I might post something like “I love grilled stone bass, might stop by @Dirksfish on Saturday”. In a perfect world, Dirk’s Fish does a daily search for all the @dirksfish posts, sees mine, and then follows me.  Which reminds me – check your @username daily to see who’s talking about you!

And, while we’re at it, here’s a quick article on what NOT to do on Twitter.

Keep those ideas coming – we’d love to hear about your adventures on Twitter!
