The sun has finally shown its face on the last day of the Boston Seafood Show. The wild weather over the last three days will almost certainly be part of how we remember IBSS 2010.
Though the cab lines have been long, the excitement and energy on the floor of the show was high. This is only my second year attending the show, and I continue to learn and gain an appreciation for the challenges the seafood industry faces in understanding and connecting to issue of “sustainable seafood.” It is important for our work as a conservation organization to understand these challenges and to interact across all of the sectors of the industry.
Judging from the traffic at the booth staffed by the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, many folks got answers to their questions about our work and the work of other Alliance members. Most importantly, by listening and asking questions ourselves our knowledge of the issues and challenges for industry has grown. Count on Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch being here next year as well.
I love the passion of all the people who work in seafood. I was reminded many many times during the show that this is a source of food and livelihoods that connects us to our planet in a unique way. Seafood has a compelling story, from the fisherman or farmers in communities that bring it to us, to everyone who loves to cook and eat it, to the fish themselves and ocean that supports them.
Healthy oceans, healthy communities, sustainable seafood – for today and for the future. It’s a vision that is achievable because seafood businesses and conservation organizations are working together. Understanding the interconnections is a big part of what has made this a great show for me!
In the future, I plan to talk about some of the questions that were raised about our work and the work of the conservation community in general. I plan as well to invite some guest bloggers to bring their voices and experience into the dialogue.
