Pacifical’s Marine Stewardship Council-certified tuna has hit the shelves of major U.S. retailers including Kroger, Walmart, Costco, and Albertsons across all 50 states, according to the Parties to the Nauru Agreement.
The canned tuna, which will be sold through Chicken of the Sea’s Genova brand, is caught in PNA waters using MSC-certified procedures, and will bear the Pacifical label on its lid.
“Genova brand, which is Thai Union-owned through Chicken of the Sea, uses high-quality yellowfin fillets packed with olive oil and has no additives or preservatives, providing a premium product much different than the chunk light tuna that American customers are accustomed to purchasing,” the PNA wrote in its monthly newsletter.
Thai Union’s director of sustainability for North America has said the company’s sustainability strategy includes a commitment to procure tuna from MSC-certified fisheries. As part of that commitment, Chicken of the Sea has signed a memorandum of understanding to source more MSC-certified tuna products from Pacifical, the PNA’s tuna marketing arm, the group reported.
“With this cooperation, Chicken of the Sea has taken an important step towards a long-term commitment to the sustainability of tuna,” Pacifical Managing Director Henk Brus said. “We all bear the responsibility of ensuring tuna stocks remains healthy for generations to come and we are excited to have Chicken of the Sea joining us on this mission.”
The PNA’s tuna fishery was recently recertified by the MSC, despite objections from some environmental and conservation groups.
