The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has announced the launch of a 60-day stakeholder consultation regarding the inclusion of catfish species Clarias, Heterobranchus, Ictalurus, Ameiurus, and Silurus into the ASC Farm Standard.
In a release about the news, the ASC said that while its experts and technical working groups have identified these species as already meeting most existing indicators within the Farm Standard, it is seeking stakeholder feedback on the applicability of the standard to catfish farming.
ASC Chief Commercial Officer Willem de Bruijn said that the consultation was prompted by the global demand for sustainably produced catfish.
“Catfish is a staple for families around the world, and this step ensures it’s produced in ways that are good for communities, animal welfare, the environment, and consumers everywhere,” he said.
According to ASC Director of Standards and Science Michiel Fransen, ASC research suggests that catfish farms could easily adapt to the current requirements of the Farm Standard.
“At the same time, some specific measures – such as feed efficiency and fasting practices – need to be adapted to reflect the unique characteristics of this species and its farming systems,” said Fransen.
He added that he especially hoped to get stakeholder feedback on “areas like sourcing, mortality limits, and fish health and welfare."
"The consultation process is vital to make sure the final requirements are not only scientifically robust but also practical and feasible for catfish farmers worldwide," Fransen said.
Stakeholders can share their perspectives by visiting the ASC website, the certification program said.
