The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) said its certification program for aquaculture feed mills is gaining momentum as 18 different mills in 12 different countries have gained certification against the standard since January.
The ASC first began permitting mills to apply for an ASC Feed Standard certification in January 2023. Under the standard, any certified mill must source its ingredients from environmentally friendly sources, and any marine ingredients used in the feed must be derived from fisheries certified to the Marine Stewardship Council standard.
Just over two years on, the ASC said its standard is continuing to gain momentum even as it approaches a new Feed Standard that will be fully in effect by 31 October 2025.
“By choosing ASC Feed Certification and meeting the rigorous environmental and social requirements of the ASC Feed Standard, these feed companies are making real change and driving full-chain responsibility,” AS Feed Engagement and U.K. Markets Manager Aisla Jones said in a release.
Among the multiple feed mills that have gained certification, Skretting has managed to secure country-firsts in Australia, Japan, and Italy. Skretting’s Imari-based feed plant achieved certification to the ASC Feed Standard in March 2025, and its Puerto Montt, Chile-based plant was the first in the world to achieve the certification in February 2024.
ASC said several other countries have feed mills meeting the standard, including Norway, Ecuador, the U.K., Canada, Chile, Vietnam, Spain, Honduras, and Costa Rica.
“This wave of certifications marks a continuing shift in the aquaculture industry,” the ASC said. “ASC certified feed producers are more directly addressing the environmental and social impacts embedded in their supply chains – from the responsible sourcing of ingredients like soy and fishmeal, to ensuring fair labor practices.”
As of July 2025, nine different companies have certified new feed mills so far this year: Skretting, Cargill, BioMar, Salmones Antártica Feed, Nosan, Grobest, Nutreco, CP Vietnam Corporation, and Vitapro.
All told with the additional 18 certification so far in 2025, 35 feed mills across the world are currently meeting the ASC Feed Standard.
“We congratulate all recently certified feed mills on their achievements and look forward to seeing the positive impact they have on the industry,” Jones said. “This marks another important step in our mission of transforming the industry. We recognize there is still progress to be made, and we remain focused on driving it forward.”
