Danish farm first to get ASC trout certified

A Danish fish farm has become the first farm to be certified to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)’s freshwater trout standard for responsible aquaculture.

Danforel’s Christiansminde Freshwater Farm earned the certification this week following and independent third-party assessment, the ASC announced today.

“ASC certification fits perfectly with our strategy,” said Erik Hansen, managing director at Danforel. “It allows our farms to demonstrate that they comply with the most rigorous farming standards and shows our customers that we are a responsible organization.”

Farms seeking ASC trout certification must demonstrate that they have a minimal impact on seabeds, water and wild populations. According to the ASC, six more trout farms are awaiting certification.

“The certification of the first freshwater trout farm this week brings ASC a step closer to becoming a truly global program,” said Chris Ninnes, CEO of the ASC. “I am thrilled to get the trout program off the ground, and I would like to extend my congratulations to Danforel for their tremendous achievement.”
