GlobalGAP CEO Kristian Moeller on aquaculture certification, harmonization

What is the company’s view on aquaculture in general? What is your vision of sustainable aquaculture?

Aquaculture is still a very young industry and far from its potential to address nutrition needs of many people. Aquaculture has huge potential to be more integrated in traditional agriculture, food and feed cycles, and to contribute sustainably and very efficiently to a more affordable diet for billions of people. GlobalGAP is best positioned as a non-for-profit industry-owned and -governed certification program that has a long history in all sectors of farming. I only hope that all the various rating and scoring initiatives begin to understand the drivers for change in the industry and engage in open and constructive dialogue with standard owners and certification systems. We must encourage collaboration instead of unhealthy competition on aspects that will necessarily result in additional burden on farms: the original target of all our efforts.
