Lakesystemer, a land-based aquaculture lighting solution provider, and Innovaqua, a Spain-based supplier of aquaculture equipment and solutions, have entered a strategic partnership.
The two companies announced the partnership as the first joint delivery involving both companies is on its way to Spain to be implemented in a Futuna Blue project to develop a seriola, or great amberjack, farm in El Puerto de Santa Maria.
The new facility will utilize recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology provided by Innovaqua and, according to the company, will have a production capacity of up to 5,000 metric tons of fish per year. Through the new partnership, Lakesystemer is providing its technology, which it said has already been proven in other land-based systems in Norway.
“These agreements are of great significance to us,” Lakesystemer Managing Director Ole Gabriel Kverneland said in a release. “Over the years, we have invested heavily in the development of both lighting and feeding technologies tailored to land-based aquaculture, and it is a key milestone for us that this work is recognized by highly qualified customers such as Innovaqua and Futuna Blue.”
Kverneland said the company has been looking to diversify away from land-based salmon production, which it has already been involved with for multiple years. Lakesystemer first partnered with Agrilight in 2023 to continue its development of lighting systems for aquaculture. At the time, Kverneland said the industry had a lot to learn about lighting from the agriculture industry.
Since then, Kverneland said the company’s lighting has become the preferred solution for land-based salmon aquaculture, and the company was looking to broaden its horizons to other species.
“In many cases, marine species place even higher demands on equipment quality, precision, and gentle feeding,” he said. “This means our innovations are highly transferable to species beyond salmon in Norway and can contribute to realizing the potential for RAS-based production of other species.”
Innovaqua Managing Director Diego Garcia said partnering with Lakesystemer allows the company to offer its customers even more integrated and sustainable land-based RAS facilities.
“The innovative feeding technology and lights from Lakesystemer will fit nicely into our portfolio and can seamlessly be integrated into our MIRANDA control system,” he said. “We look forward to exploring the vast opportunities this cooperation can bring to the table for our customers.”
