NTT Green & Food announced plans to begin construction on a land-based coho salmon and trout recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
NTT Green & Food is a member of telecommunications company NTT Group. The subsidiary sells seafood and algae used as animal feed and, according to the company, has land-based aquaculture at the core of its business. The new RAS will be created in collaboration with AquaBioTech Group, an aquaculture, fisheries, and marine environmental consulting, testing, and research and development company.
AquaBioTech Group has worked on other seafood-related industry projects, including a project with Fisheries Development Oman on its fisheries and aquaculture industries.
NTT Green & Food said the new project is a part of its initiative to create “sustainable local communities, aiming to revitalize regional industries, create employment, and address local challenges through the use of digital technologies, with land-based aquaculture as a core pillar.”
The company said the RAS is projected to produce roughly 310 metric tons (MT) of market-sized trout and 260 MT of intermediate-sized coho salmon for nearby offshore aquaculture operations within Miyagi Prefecture.
“Focusing on seafood production through land-based aquaculture, we aim to contribute to regional revitalization by creating jobs and stimulating local industries,” NTT Green & Food President and CEO Yoshikazu Kusumi said in a release. “To realize a better future, NTT Green & Food will further strengthen collaboration with AquaBioTech Group and other partners.”
NTT Green & Food was launched in 2023 as a joint venture with Japan’s Regional Fish Institute.
