Pure Salmon Japan has secured over USD 180 million (EUR 155 million) in additional investments for its land-based salmon farm in Japan.
Pure Salmon has announced plans to build recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facilities for raising salmon worldwide, including Japan, France, China, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The Japanese facility, which will be located in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, is planned to have capacity of 10,000 metric tons (MT) – which the company said would make it the largest land-based salmon farm in the country.
“The project meets growing domestic demand for premium seafood while strengthening national food security and reducing reliance on imports through stable, locally produced supply of salmon,” Pure Salmon said.
Pure Salmon’s parent company, 8F Asset Management, had already secured USD 460 million (EUR 397 million) in funding for the Japan-based RAS, and this USD 180 million investment brings the total funding to USD 640 million (EUR 552.2 million). The latest funding round was led by funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group, a global investment manager with USD 54 billion (EUR 46 billion) in assets under management on behalf of 2,000 institutional clients.
“We are very pleased to complete this financing and to partner with Fortress on Pure Salmon Japan,” 8F Asset Management Chief Investment Officer Pier Paolo Sfara said in a release. “Fortress brings not only strong institutional capital but also deep experience investing across global markets, including Japan. Their involvement represents another important step forward for the project and reflects strong confidence in our platform.”
Fortress was joined by Tor Investment Management, an existing investor in the project with USD 2 billion (EUR 1.7 billion) under management.
"Having been involved in this project from an early stage, we are delighted to see the financing come together and to partner with Fortress,” Tor Investment Management Managing Director Sean Pepper said. “This transaction supports the development of what we expect to be Japan's largest – and one of the world's most significant – fully land-based salmon production facilities.”
Pure Salmon Japan, formerly Soul of Japan, has already begun construction on the RAS and expects to have its first full salmon harvest in February 2028. The company chose Cflow to provide its fish handling system in August 2025 and has continued developing the project since breaking ground in 2020.
“Pure Salmon Japan is a key project within our global Pure Salmon platform,” 8F Asset Management Founder and Chairman Stephane Farouze said. “We are building a network of large-scale, land-based aquaculture facilities to sustainably produce high-quality salmon close to end consumers. Japan is a strategically important market, and this project reflects our long-term commitment to developing resilient, local food production systems.”
Pure Salmon said that once it is completed, the facility will be “one of the most advanced land-based salmon farms in the world.” It also said it plans to engage with a group of long-term equity partners on advancing the project.
"We are deeply encouraged by the dedication and conviction shown by our investors in supporting Pure Salmon Japan through this financing,” Pure Salmon Japan CEO Erol Emed said. “Their commitment underscores the strategic importance of this project and the growing relevance of sustainable domestic seafood production in Japan.”
