Pure Salmon, which has announced plans to build a series of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facilities worldwide, has chosen Cflow to provide the fish-handling system for its Japan facility.

Pure Salmon’s parent company, 8F Asset Management, has secured USD 460 million (EUR 395 million) toward building the project in Japan. Dubbed the “Soul of Japan,” the land-based salmon farm is located in Tsu, Mie Prefecture.

Pure Salmon has already begun working on the project and is planning to have its first harvest in February 2028.

To achieve that, Cflow said it has been selected to cover the entire fish-handling chain across the Soul of Japan’s six buildings – from smolt to harvest.

“We have worked closely with Pure Salmon and Pure Salmon Technology since 2022, and we look forward to contributing to a project that will set new standards for land-based aquaculture,” Cflow Vice President of Sales Gunn-Marit Nerem said in a release. “It’s about combining technological precision with respect for the fish.”

Cflow said the fish-handling system will be tailor-made to the Soul of Japan facility in order to get it to its goal of producing at least 10,000 metric tons (MT) of salmon per year.

“At Cflow, we have significant experience with adult fish. Meanwhile, Pure Salmon’s technology supplier, Pure Salmon Technology, has a lot of experience with smolt. We’re combining the niche knowledge from all parties and selecting the best parts of it for the new facility,” Nerem said.

Cflow specializes in fish handling and was also chosen to deliver fish-handling technology for Phase 2 of Salmon Evolution’s project in Norway.

Pure Salmon CEO Per Ivar Foshaug said Cflow’s experience in fish handling is the main driver behind the choice.

“Cflow’s expertise in fish handling is crucial to ensuring both high quality and efficiency in production. Our shared ambition is to produce healthy, locally produced salmon in a way that safeguards both the environment and consumer needs,” Foshaug said.
