Aquaculture company Lakeland announced on Monday it has suffered losses estimated at GBP 2 million (USD 3.2 million, EUR 2.2 million) in the second half of 2009 due to high mortality and reduced growth caused by sea lice.
The Marine Farms ASA subsidiary said the losses are concentrated at Hoganess Salmon, one of Lakeland’s salmon farms on the west coast of Shetland. As a result, new harvest volume predictions are 2,500 metric tons for the third quarter and 3,000 metric tons in the fourth quarter.
However, Marine Farms’ cobia hatchery in Belize has started production, and the first harvest of 50,000 cobia juveniles has been stocked. The company plans to produce an additional 200,000 juveniles before the end of the year.
