European Maritime Day recognized

European Maritime Day is being marked on Wednesday with numerous events across the continent. Launched in 2007, the annual celebration, part of the European Union’s Integrated Maritime Policy, is designed to increase visibility of the region’s maritime industries.

Among the events is a stakeholder conference hosted by José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, and EC Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Commissioner Joe Borg is currently underway in Rome. The conference focuses on ocean-related cross-policy issues such as tourism, climate change and the implementation of the Integrated Maritime Policy.

Spain’s contribution to the celebration centers on a presentation by the country’s Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs of two new books: “The Seas of Spain” and “Human Activities in the Seas of Spain.”

Written by almost 50 oceanography experts and published by the Directorate General for the Sustainability of the Coast and Sea, “The Seas of Spain” provides valuable information on the diverse ecosystems in Spanish waters and the species that inhabit them. The book will be presented in Madrid by Elena Espinosa, the minister responsible for Spain’s marine affairs.

“Human Activities in the Seas of Spain” gives a diagnosis of the diverse uses of the country’s seas while providing an exhaustive description of the consequences of these activities and an outlook on the future of Spain’s seas.

Both books are published in Spanish and English.
