Faroese cold water prawn fishery gets MSC nod

A Faroese Northeast Arctic coldwater prawn fishery has received sustainability certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

According to the fishery assessment, coordinated by Danish fishing company Maresco, the fishery kept bycatch and discards to 1 to 3 percent. The assessment also included underwater cameras to observe trawls. There is also no sign of overfishing, as the prawn stocks in the area have been strong and healthy since the 1970s.

"It is a great pleasure and honour for us to achieve MSC certification, as this has become a must for us and our customers," Eyðun Durhuus, managing director of Maresco. "Sustainability will always be a key word in our daily work for a long-lasting fishery in The North East Atlantic area."

"This is the third Faroese fishery to win MSC certification in the past six months and reflects the Faroe Island fisheries' commitment to demonstrably sustainable fishing," said Gisli Gislason, MSC Manager Iceland, Greenland and Faroes. "The low-impact and strong management of this fishery are a credit to the fishermen and the fishing companies that operate the three vessels."
