MSC expands presence in China

Looking to expand its presence in China, the Marine Stewardship Council announced on Monday that it appointed Edith Lam of Kera International Ltd. as its supply chain consultant in the country.

In the new role, Lam will familiarize Chinese seafood companies with MSC chain-of-custody certification in the hopes that they’ll participate in the sustainable fisheries program. The certification ensures MSC-labeled seafood can be traced through the supply chain.

A food technologist and auditor, Lam has more than 17 years of food-safety experience and more than 10 years in the seafood industry. She is also a registered trainer with the Institution of Environmental Health Officers in the United Kingdom and a lead auditor for the British Retail Consortium and the Ethical Trading Initiative.

“I am delighted to welcome Edith to the team, we are very fortunate to have someone of her caliber and reputation working with us in this very important region,” said Amy Jackson, MSC supply chain director.

“With increasing volumes of MSC certified fish entering the market we have seen a sharp rise in MSC chain-of-custody certificates in China, and based on the volumes of seafood currently under assessment, this trend is set to continue,” added Jackson. “Edith’s appointment allows us to provide the needed outreach support in one of the regions with the most rapid MSC uptake.”

The announcement comes during this week’s 14th annual China Fisheries & Seafood Exposition in Qingdao. Jackson is speaking at the event’s inaugural Sustainable Seafood Forum on Monday.
