A fishery consultant is developing a Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) for a Greek sardine and anchovy fishery.
MacAllister Elliott & Partners is developing the FIP on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for a fishery based in the northern Greek town of Kavala. Along with WWF, the consultants are partnering with purse seine fishermen of the Manios seafood company, the Greek national Fisheries Research Institute and Delhaize subsidiary AB Vassilopoulos, one of the largest supermarket chains in Greece.
“Sustainability is a key driver in the market today and a successful FIP adds to the credibility and longevity of a fishery and its resources,” said Kat Collinson, speaking for MacAllister Elliot & Partners. “A FIP can improve management and harvesting practices of a fishery and set it on a path to sustainability.”
The FIP is geared toward improving the fishery to the point where it will comply with requirements for certification by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The ultimate goal of the FIP is to allow the fishery to seek and receive MSC certification.
