Perch farmer launches sustainability partnership

U.S.-based yellow perch producer Bell Aquaculture has launched the “Future of Fish” partnership to enhance its sustainability efforts.

The partnership includes Virginia Cobia Farms, Indiana Soybean Alliance, University of Wisconsin School of Freshwaster Sciences and The Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute.

To kick off the event, Indiana-based Bell offered tours of its closed-containment systems. The technology was designed by engineers at the Freshwater Institute to reduce its environmental impact by using water recirculating systems that “minimize water use, maximize waste capture, and practically eliminate disease interaction between farmed and wild fish,” said the company.

“As our country, and world, seeks sustainable, quality food options, Indiana Soybean Alliance is very pleased to be supporting this effort to provide healthy, great-tasting and ecologically responsible fish options for consumers,” said Shelia Lingle, director of aquaculture for the Indiana Soybean Alliance. “We’ve been working closely with Bell Aquaculture since its inception in 2005 to develop more sustainable, soy-based feed options for the aquaculture industry.”
