Survey: Japan seeks sustainable seafood

Greenpeace-Japan on Wednesday released the results of a survey it conducted in January and February to gauge consumers’ awareness of sustainable seafood in Japan, the world’s largest seafood market.

The goal, according to Greenpeace oceans campaigner Wakao Hanaoka, was to understand how the environmental activist organization can best work with the Japanese public to conserve the oceans. Japanese consumers aren’t as familiar with the sustainable seafood movement as their European and North American counterparts, she said in her blog on Wednesday.

The survey found that more than half of respondents said they would like to see labels on seafood products caught using sustainable methods, and two-thirds of respondents said they would like more information about the seafood they’re purchasing. Additionally, only 12 percent of respondents said they would eat seafood regardless of its status.

Hanaoka added that Greenpeace is working with 20 companies in the country to “increase the sustainability of Japan’s seafood.”
