Oyster disease outbreak confirmed in England

An outbreak of herpesvirus-1 microvariant (OsHV-1 µvar) has been confirmed in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) on the north coast of Kent by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS).

Pacific oysters – also known as rock oysters – are the only species of shellfish currently known to be susceptible to the virus. There are no implications for human health.

Where diseases are suspected or confirmed, measures are applied in the form of movement controls to restrict its spread to other parts of the coast.

Existing statutory controls for OsHV-1 µVar in the affected area have been reviewed and the pre-existing control area has been expanded.

To move live Pacific oysters into and out of the designated area, applications must be made to the Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI).

Control areas are also currently in place in Essex and Poole Harbour, Dorset.
