Seafood HACCP update sought

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Thursday approved comprehensive food-safety legislation that includes provisions pertaining to seafood safety and improving food transportation in rural regions.

One provision introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), would direct the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to update the Fish and Fisheries Products Hazards and Control Guidance, which assists seafood processors in the development of their Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans.

The guidance was last updated in 2001, and Murkowski’s amendment would require the FDA to update it within six months of enactment.

Another amendment introduced by Murkowski would direct the FDA to do a study on improving food transportation in rural regions, including much of Alaska.

The bill would also address recent events concerning unsafe and tainted foods and would give the FDA new authorities and resources to tackle food-safety problems and update food-safety standards.
