Tradex Foods introduces radiation testing

In the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan and the widespread fear of contaminated seafood across the globe, Tradex Foods on Wednesday introduced radiation testing.

The Victoria, British Columbia-based seafood supplier has adopted a strict radiation testing policy with regard to the raw materials used in production in China.

The company will extensively test fish caught in FAO Statistical Area 61 — which encompasses the northwest Pacific, including the South China Sea, East China Sea, Yellow Sea, Sea of Japan (East Sea), Sea of Okhotsk and western Bering Sea — and periodically test fish caught in FAO Statistical Areas 18 (Arctic Sea), 71 (western central Pacific) and 67 (northeast Pacific). Tradex has also implemented regular testing of the fresh water used in production facilities in China.

Testing will be conducted by accredited labs authorized by the China Government Inspection Bureau. The labs will provide analysis to a detection level of 0.5 becquerel per kilogram (Japan has set a legal limit of 2,000 becquerel per kilogram for seafood). The information will be added to the company’s inspection reports, which customers will have access to.
