Naked Fish to launch in U.S. market

After recently receiving U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) import approval, Naked Fish in Scotland will begin shipping its Marine Stewardship Council-certified frozen fish line to the U.S. market later this year.

Naked Fish is in talks with three major U.S. retailers to carry the line of 280-gram, two-portion packs of line-caught Atlantic cod, Scottish smoked haddock, Atlantic Scottish salmon, and Scottish smoked salmon.

Two major U.K. retailers will also begin carrying the line in early October, while European wholesalers are expected to pick up the product this fall.

“We have received an incredible response to the range in the U.K. and Europe form both wholesale and retail outlets as…each portion is the same weight, size and quality every time,” said Stephen Nicholson, Naked Fish founder.

The line is already being distributed to the U.K. foodservice market in single-portion, steam-fresh pouches.

“This is going exceptionally well here in the U.K. with the wholesale and hotel market,” Nicholson said.

In the U.S. market, which Nicholson expects to be in by December, the two-portion packs will retail for a suggested USD 7 to USD 7.49 per box.

Next year, Naked Fish plans to expand its offerings to include “fish in fish” all-natural portions. The line will include Atlantic cod portions stuffed with coldwater Atlantic shrimp and Scottish salmon portions stuffed with hot-smoked Salmon Mornay.

“We have developed and designed the equipment to deliver a range of bespoke center plate fish creations for 2013,” said Nicholson.
