Smoked salmon, fish fingers net awards

WildWaters Smoked Salmon "Pastrami" and Sainsbury's Basics 10 Fish Fingers were among the winners of the United Kingdom's 30th annual Quality Food Awards, following a ceremony at The Hurlingham Club in London earlier this week.

Thirteen seafood products were among the 100-plus retail food products shortlisted for the competition.

WildWaters Smoked Salmon "Pastrami" from Shetland Products was the winner of the "fish" category, one of 26 categories.

"This is excellent news for us, particularly when you consider the other products shortlisted in our category," said Michael Stark, managing director of Shetland Products.

"We recently took value-added processing to an entirely new level and have since unveiled our WildWaters range of uniquely flavored smoked and marinated salmon products — all devised by our in-house team," he added. "The range is already proving tremendously popular in the retail marketplace — both in the UK and overseas, which is remarkable given the fact that it was only launched a short while ago."

Sainsbury's Basics 10 Fish Fingers from Young's Seafood was the winner of the "fish-value" category and the "Gold Value Q" award, one of two overall prizes. The other, called the "Gold Q," was captured by Genius Gluten Free Brown Bread from Gardyne Foods.

The other seafood product winners were Marks & Spencer King Prawn Tikka Masala from Pinneys of Scotland in the "ethnic ready meals" category; Marks & Spencer King Prawn Noodle Soup in the "soups" category; and Marks & Spencer Scottish Lochmuir™ Melted Middle Salmon Mousses in the "delicatessen" category.

Earning "highly commended" or "commended" recognition were Sainsbury's Basics Smoked Salmon Trimmings from The Seafood Co. in the "fish-value" category; Asda Extra Special King Prawn, Italian Orzo Pasta and Roasted Garlic Butter from Coldwater Seafood in the "ready meals" category; and Asda Counter Seabass with Lemongrass, Lime and Chilli Butter from New England Seafood in the "fish" category.

The products are judged by a panel of about 50 food experts, who look at each product's taste, flavor, texture, aroma, ingredients list, innovation, packaging, presentation and price point.
