U.S. grocery chains and legislators are proposing initiatives to lower food prices nationwide.

In an effort to reduce food prices – including seafood – Landover, Maryland, U.S.A.-based retail chain Giant Food is expanding its “Fresh Low Prices” initiative.

The operator of 163 supermarkets in the U.S. states of Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, as well as Washington, D.C., said it has lowered the price of hundreds of items across its private-brand portfolio over the past nine months. Its private brands include Giant, Nature’s Promise, Taste of Inspirations, Smart Living, Always My Baby, Companion, and CareOne.

The initiative’s expansion includes slashed prices on “essential items,” according to the firm, including a widened list of fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood and pantry staples.

“When shopping, customers can look for the blue ‘Fresh Low Price’ tag on items like salmon, chicken breasts, gala apples, red potatoes, shrimp, almond milk, and more to find savings across the store,” Giant said.

Giant Food Senior Vice President of Merchandising Tonya Douglas said the decision to expand the initiative was made with consumers in mind, especially as overall food and beverage inflation last year – whether real or perceived – was partially to blame for a drop in fresh and frozen seafood sales.

“Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and we understand the challenges they face with rising costs,” Douglas said. “By making these investments, we’re ensuring that our customers can continue to rely on us for the best value on the products they need.”

Aldi USA, similarly, is featuring a few frozen seafood items as part of its “Aldi Finds” price reduction promotion in February.

They include Fremont Fish Market Beer Battered Fish Fillets for USD 5.19 (EUR 5.00), Whole Cooked Lobster for USD 10.99 (EUR 10.60), and Specially Selected Bacon Wrapped Scallops for USD 6.99 (EUR 6.70).

Slashing prices on groceries is not just a priority of U.S. retailers, as congresspeople are seeking to accomplish the same goal.

Representative Josh Gottheimer (D-New Jersey) is introducing legislation to help “lower the cost of a family’s grocery bill, tackle rising food prices and the supply chain crisis, and take action against any meat or poultry companies that are colluding and making profits on the backs of hard-working middle class families,” his office said in a press release.

Gottheimer is also calling on the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to restore federal communication with grocers, farmers, and producers, as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), to help contain the Bird Flu outbreak.

Likewise, a cohort of Democratic lawmakers led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) warned in a letter to Trump that companies “often exploit crises like pandemics and avian flu outbreaks as an opportunity to raise prices beyond what is needed to cover rising costs.”

Lowering grocery prices was one of the primary policies Trump pushed during his reelection campaign, but the group of Democrats say Trump has abandoned that goal.

“During your campaign, you repeatedly promised you would lower food prices ‘immediately’ if elected president. But, during your first week of office you have instead focused on mass deportations,” the lawmakers said in their letter, per NBC News.

Egg prices rose nearly 37 percent for the year ending December 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, while overall food costs rose 1.3 percent in December for the year.

The Trump administration said in a statement that it was working to lower the cost of living for families.

“President Trump immediately took action on day one to unleash American energy, which will drive down costs for families across the country," Anna Kelly, the deputy White House press secretary, said. "He has already ended the failed economic policies of the past four years that skyrocketed inflation, which were rubber-stamped by [Senator] Warren.”
