Final permits in hand, Kingfish Company set to break ground on Maine RAS farm

The Kingfish Company has announced it has received the final state level permits needed to begin construction of its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Jonesport, Maine, U.S.A.

The Kats, The Netherlands-based firm was granted approvals via Maine’s Site Location Development Act and Natural Resources Protection Act applications earlier in November, it said in a press release. It has now secured permits that show it is in compliance with the substantial checks required, including inspections by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

The Kingfish Company has already secured all other permits required for it to begin site development, it said. The company first received a permit from the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands in September 2020, which formalized state approval for Kingfish Maine to install necessary intake and discharge pipes. Then, in June 2021, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection approved a Maine pollutant discharge elimination system permit.

With the latest permit, the company said it has everything it needs to prepare its site for production.

The Kingfish Company announced a plan to build a new recirculating aquaculture facility in Jonesport, Maine in 2019. The company said it currently projects its farm will be able to produce up to 8,500 metric tons of yellowtail annually upon its completion.
