With 40 years salmon farming under his belt, Mowi Ireland Managing Director Jan Feenstra has announced his intention to retire from the company on 1 July, 2022.
Feenstra first joined the Irish operation in 1982 when it was called Fanad Fisheries, which at that time had a 50/50 joint venture with Mowi. He took over the running of the business in 1997 and has participated in several ownership and name changes over the subsequent years.
“This business is never boring and certainly not for the faint of heart when working in the wild and natural environment! Our company’s success over these years comes down to the commitment and efforts from our staff and my colleagues – they made it easy for me and I am most grateful to them over the 40 years that I have been here,” Feenstra said.
In a press release, Mowi CEO Ivan Vindheim thanked Feenstra for his years of work at the company during a period that saw the Irish business grow into a world-leading supplier of organic salmon.
“Jan’s vast experience raising organic salmon and his ability to lead a highly effective and motivated team will be difficult to replace, so we are pleased that Jan will continue to support Mowi throughout 2022 in order to share his knowledge,” Vindheim said.
Mowi said that it will begin a leadership recruitment process early next year.
Mowi Ireland operates in five counties on the west coast of Ireland – from Donegal in the north to Cork and Kerry in the southwest of the country. It currently produces around 7,000 metric tons (MT) of Atlantic salmon annually.
This summer, it received approval for a new EUR 6 million (USD 6.8 million) 18-cage organic salmon farm to be built in Bantry Bay, County Cork.
