Canadian wholesaler recalls fish balls

A Canadian wholesaler of Asian foods is recalling several lots of fish balls due to the potential presence of a dangerous bacteria.

Toronto, Ontario-based Mannarich Food Inc. is recalling all units (up to and including 21 October) of its private label fish balls, including: MF Inc. Fishballs (previously unfrozen), MF Inc. Premium Cuttle Fish Balls (previously frozen), MF Inc. Lobster Flavored Fish Balls (previously frozen), and MF Inc. Fish Balls with Shrimp (previously frozen).

The recalled fish balls, which were distributed in Ontario and Quebec, “may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum,” CFIA said in a press release. However, there have been no illnesses reported from consuming the products.

“This recall was triggered by CFIA test results. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings,” CFIA said.

The recall is one of several seafood recalls from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency this year. In July, Delta Pacific Seafood Ltd. in Delta, British Columbia, recalled its Western Family brand of Original Wild Sockeye Smoked Salmon Nuggets from the marketplace due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
