Norovirus concerns prompt more oyster recalls in Canada

Another Canadian oyster supplier is recalling certain Pacific oysters due to illnesses from possible norovirus.

Richmond, British-Columbia-based Union Bay Seafood Ltd. is recalling certain Pacific Oysters, sold under its Union Bay Seafood Ltd. brand, due to “possible norovirus,” the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said in a press release.

While there have been illnesses linked to the recalled Union Bay oysters, a Health Canada spokesperson declined to provide further details on the illnesses to SeafoodSource.

“Consumers should not consume and distributors, retailers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not sell or use the recalled products…” CFIA said.

Earlier this week, Heriot Bay, British Columbia, Canada-based Sawmill Bay Shellfish Co. Ltd. recalled certain lots of its oysters due to norovirus. Its Sawmill Bay Shellfish brand Pacific Aquacultured Oysters were involved in the recall and were distributed in Western Canada, including to one retailer in Alberta and another in British Columbia.

However, no illnesses were reported from consuming those oysters, CFIA said in a press release.

The Union Bay recall applies to certain 5-dozen packs of Pacific Oysters, Chef Creek Xsm Pacific Oysters, Cascadia Xsm, and Pacific Oysters Royal Miyagi Xsm.

They were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and possibly nationally, CFIA said.

“If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor,” CFIA said. The recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.
