Fresh local seafood and pangasius rule on e-commerce site Dingdong

Domestically-sourced seafood and low-priced pangasius are outranking imported products in the sales rankings of Chinese online retailer Dingdong.

The top-three selling seafood items on the Dingdong site in December 2021 are fresh shrimp, fresh clams, and frozen pangasius.

“Dingdong’s fresh river seafood products occupy a larger proportion of the entire sales mix,” said Hui Zhang, public relations head at Dingdong (Cayman) Limited, which operates the site.

Hui told SeafoodSource the firm doesn’t break down seafood sales individually as part of its overall business, but stressed Dingdong is the first Chinese e-commerce company to deliver live and fresh seafood.

“Fresh aquatic products have always been popular with consumers,” she said.

To keep seafood quality standards high, Dingdong has set up on-site aquatic product testing laboratories in all its warehouses across the country.

“Dingdong also introduced Intertek, one of the world’s largest consumer-product testing and certification companies, in [our] aquatic product laboratories,” Hui said. “After various tests conducted in the warehouse, Dingdong continues to control the aquatic products in different aspects.”

China’s e-commerce sector has had a tough year after various interventions by Chinese regulators saw some worried investors avoid tech stocks listed on bourses in China and overseas. Investors have also been worried about continuing losses at major e-commerce players amid a fierce, big-spending battle for market share.  Additionally, China’s seafood imports have been dented by restrictions on cargo due to COVID-related inspections and controls.
