Meijer, Hissho Sushi open sushi and craft beer bar

Grand Rapids, Michigan, U.S.A.-based grocery chain Meijer and Hissho Sushi have partnered to open a novel sushi and craft beer bar in one of the retailer’s stores.

Meijer, which operates around 245 supermarkets, opened the “first-of-its-kind” sushi bar at its store in Brighton, Michigan.

“With this new concept, Hissho Sushi is redefining the experience of a customer’s evening at their local grocery store,” Hissho CEO Dan Beem said in a press release.

While Hissho already provides sushi to-go in Meijer stores, the new Hissho Sushi and Craft Beer Bar “allows us to go even further, providing one-of-a-kind experiences where shoppers can conveniently enjoy our products, a local craft beer and get in their weekly grocery run,” Beem said.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Hissho has nearly 2,000 locations in 42 states. It partnered with 28 Walmart stores in Charlotte late last year to launch a “Hissho on the Go” concept.

The new commissary concept is designed to deliver “tasty, fresh sushi to foodies across the Charlotte metro area, conveniently found in the grocer’s deli,” Hissho said in a press release.

Meijer Director of Merchandising Becky Bronkema said the Hissho Sushi and Craft Beer Bar is “a great opportunity to provide customers another option to consider while shopping our stores.”

“We offer fresh to-go options, including pizza, sandwiches and sushi, at most of our stores already, so we envision the in-store restaurant concept to allow local neighbors to meet friends, have a quick business meeting or just grab a quick snack while checking grocery shopping off their list of to-dos,” Bronkema said.

The 840-square foot sushi bar features trained local sushi chefs who use “premium-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients,” Hissho said.

Besides sushi, the menu provides hot appetizers such as Asian chicken wings and Boom Boom Shrimp. It also offers breakfast foods such as avocado toast and açai bowls.
