Supplying salmon to a Japanese sushi restaurant chain has helped increase The Scottish Salmon Company’s (SSC) exports to the region by 25 percent in the last year.
The Edinburgh-based firm’s “Tartan Salmon” brand, which it launched in August to grow its Japanese business, has been trialed at 27 Genki Sushi restaurants in Japan. The promotion has since been extended to 127 Uobei stores – a subsidiary group of Genki Sushi.
Genki Sushi’s supplier was introduced to SSC two years ago at a Showcasing Scotland event.
“Japan and the Far East is a key market and demand for our salmon has helped drive a 25 percent increase in our exports over the past year,” SSC CEO Craig Anderson said. “We expect this to increase as more consumers experience the great taste and provenance of our quality Tartan Salmon. The success of Genki Sushi’s showcase of Scottish salmon is testament to this. We take great pride in our Scottish heritage, and this is demonstrated through our commitment to bringing the finest quality Scottish salmon to worldwide markets.”
SSC, which is in the process of being acquired by Faroese salmon farming firm Bakkafrost, posted first-half 2019 operating revenues of GBP 111.8 million (USD 145.2 million, EUR 130 million), up from GBP 98.3 million (USD 127.6 million, EUR 114.3 million) year-on-year, based on a salmon harvest of 18,463 metric tons (MT). Its exports accounted for 67 percent of sales.
